On leaving Charterhouse public school, Sir Richard attended Magdalen College, Oxford, graduating with a Masters degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE). In 1974 he joined the Foreign Office and, after seven years at Whitehall, he was posted to the British Embassy in Tokyo, Japan.
Having impressed with his attention to detail and soft-spoken tact, his masters promoted him to Hong Kong, where he met his wife. They were married in 1986 and have gone on to have three children.
In 1998 he was knighted for services involved in the clean handover of Hong Kong to China, during which time he proved his worth: involving himself in implementing a wide range of internal staff rationalisations and reorganisation programmes, ready for the handover.
In 2001, having established many longstanding contacts with the Chinese Government, he moved to the British High Commission in Singapore, connected to Trade & Investment, where he provides back-up and a wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with sometimes complex issues that abound in the Far East.
Sir Richard has advised on various diplomatic affairs throughout China, Japan and the Far East and is seen as “a safe pair of hands” among prominent political and business figures worldwide.
