After education at Gordenstoun, John took a short-service commission with the Royal Military Police, serving in Northern Ireland and Aden.

On leaving the Army, John attended the London School of Economics, graduating with a BSc in Mathematics. In 1971 he joined the accountancy firm Coopers & Lybrand, as a graduate trainee. After qualifying, he concentrated on audit and investigation work before switching into Corporate Recovery.

In 1976 he moved to Nestle to join a team working for the then chairman, Ernest Saunders. At Nestle John was involved in implementing a wide range of internal staff rationalisations and reorganisation programmes.

Headhunted to join John Harvey Jones at ICI in 1981, John was a key member of the management committee that was responsible for the restructuring and cost-cutting programme that resulted in ICI’s dramatic turn-around into a faster moving, more profit-conscious organisation.

Following a one-year consultancy project for Alan Sugar at Amstrad, John returned to Coopers & Lybrand in 1986. After his later transfer to their US Office, his subsequent involvement with the audit of Fidelity Investments - the US and International mutual fund giant - led him to join that company in 1991, working out of their corporate headquarters in Boston.

Responsible for the subsequent acquisition and restructuring of the Colt Telecommunications Company in the UK, John rapidly moved into a global role with Fidelity, reporting to the CEO, Edward C Johnson, and advising on structures, systems and staffing in Fidelity offices in Japan and the Far East. He also played a key role in Fidelity’s mergers and acquisitions in the telecommunications, property and insurance sectors.

John left Fidelity in 2002 to set up his own Consultancy (JMC*) operating both in the US and throughout Europe. Now based permanently in the UK, John advises a number of major corporates, including Fidelity, in the UK, France and Germany.

A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, John was appointed a non-executive director of the Arcadia Group in 2002 by Philip Green, a personal friend.

He is also an active member of, and past Honorary Chairman of the Royal Military Police Association. A committed Christian, he is a member of the Fees Advisory Commission of the Church Of England General Synod.
